Mineral pet litter (MPL) can be clumping or non-clumping. This means it either forms a solid clump (“ball”) that encases the urine, or the urine absorbs throughout the granules. These properties significantly influence the product’s duration and efficiency. Regarding maintenance, users must remove faeces and clumps daily for clumping products. Refilling the removed material extends the product’s lifespan up to 25 days for a 10-litre bag.
For non-clumping, classic litters, less maintenance is required. The substrate absorbs urine until it reaches saturation, at which point users need to replace the entire tray’s content. Generally, this replacement occurs approximately every 7 days.
In terms of duration, considering a standard 10-litre size, the lifespan of clumping litter under optimal maintenance conditions does not differ significantly from that of non-clumping or classic litter. However, regarding waste generation, one can consider clumping versions more efficient. This is because users replace the total content of the tray less frequently. Nonetheless, the actual efficiency and duration depend on the specific use and maintenance performed by the owner.
